Special Issue on AI-Driven Internet Technologies for Future Smart Cities

You are invited to submit papers to the Journal of Telecommunications and the Digital Economy for a special issue on AI-Driven Internet Technologies for Future Smart Cities. The Journal is indexed by Scopus and rated Q2 by SCImago.

After a double-blind peer-review process, papers accepted for this special issue will be published on the JTDE website and in the Journal of Telecommunications and the Digital Economy – volume 10, issue 4, December 2022. There are no publication charges.

The aim of this special issue is to provide insights into the use of digital technologies to enhance managerial, organizational and societal innovations.

On the verge of a new era of globalized digital transformation, people and their surroundings are increasingly linked by utilizing rapidly changing intelligent technologies. This transformation holds great promise for enhanced wellbeing, but it also poses significant challenges at the complex intersection of technology and society. The concept of a smart city is based on the idea that all smart devices share their information and resources through a centralized ecosystem of devices. Future smart connected cities, in turn, aim to synergistically combine intelligent technologies with the natural and built environments, including infrastructure to improve the social, economic, and environmental wellbeing of residents living within it. The processing, storage, and lightweight analytics capabilities of IoT and smart cities have greatly improved with the introduction of smartphones, cloud computing, and edge computing.

The number of devices present in a smart city keeps changing. Therefore, the development of smart devices often leads to compatibility and security issues. In order to address this challenge and ensure smooth connectivity among smart devices, artificial intelligence and deep learning approaches can be adopted for achieving improved management and coordination of a device’s data and network models. Deep Learning approaches have emerged as powerful computational models in recent years, with significant success in dealing with massive amounts of data in unsupervised settings. Deep learning and artificial intelligence (AI) approaches are reshaping the field because they provide an efficient method of learning representation and allow the system to learn features automatically from data, without the need for explicit design. Wearable devices, cloud computing, and data analytics, among other emerging Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, have the potential to acquire and process massive amounts of data from the physical world.

To leverage the benefits of an IoT and AI-enabled ecosystem, a thorough examination of its systems, networks, and structures is required. However, there are several issues in smart cities concerning data transmission, storage and processing, analytics, and network management. As a result, extensive research is required to identify and overcome service quality and cost-effectiveness constraints in smart cities.

Writing for the Journal:

The Journal of Telecommunications and the Digital Economy accepts papers on a wide range of topics related to technology and services in support of the digital economy and digital society.

Papers that describe novel developments – whether existing or envisaged – and their benefits are particularly welcome. Papers should be written for readers who are educated and well informed but are not necessarily expert in the relevant field of research. Authors should be careful to situate their work within the context of the digital economy.

Papers should be about 4,000–5,000 words in length, excluding references.
